despite having been raised by two loving parents and given what was overall a happy childhood, menma grew to be bitter and spiteful, hitting a rebellious phase that never quite went away. he began to resent his parents for not fighting hard enough, accusing them of slacking on their duties as shinobi sworn to protect the village. he's said some rather harsh things along those lines suggesting to others that he wished his parents would die for their village, even if that isn't technically what he means by his words.

he merely got the idea in his head through konohagakure's rampant propaganda that every shinobi should be willing to put their lives on the line for their village and some rumours he had heard about his parents had rubbed him the wrong way. one night he ran away from home in a fit of anger during a one-sided argument, becoming a missing nin and beginning his self-assigned task of collecting uniquely skilled shinobi.

subconsciously he suspects that kurama's yin chakra was what was influencing his mood and behaviour, but he felt powerless to fight it, instead choosing the easier path of simply giving in to the tailed beast's inherent hatred.

(18-25) menma has defected from konohagakure and garnered a bad reputation for hunting down shinobi with unique, coveted abilities. he has earned a place in the bingo book as an s-rank missing nin and he won't hesitate to remind you of that. his plans for the shinobi he's abducting are as of yet unknown, but some suspect he may be preparing to mount an attack on konohagakure.

(any age) menma is naruto's twin and grew up alongside him as orphaned brothers. they each have half of kurama's chakra sealed inside them. for a long time in the academy, menma tagged along with naruto, frequently getting into trouble with him (if not causing more trouble than necessary and maybe taking things a little too far). once naruto became so obsessed with sasuke, however, menma felt himself slipping into the background. he grew to hate sasuke because of that and, eventually, decided that his twin's goal of trying to save his friend was futile and that everyone would be better of if sasuke simply...went away. he quietly defected from the village in much the same way as the uchiha, but in menma's case, he was determined to hunt down sasuke and put an end to his bullshit once and for all.

(20) high school drop-out and troubled delinquent, menma was orphaned at birth alongside his long-lost twin brother, naruto uzumaki, of whom he has no knowledge. he was raised in a "special" orphanage by danzo shimura, who eventually came to adopt him and sent him to private school, where menma got into numerous fights on account of being bullied for being an orphan. menma retired from high school to get his ged instead so that he could start working as one of danzo's elite "soldiers", called anbu, who are tasked with doing his political dirty work.

(any age) being born quirkless didn't stop menma from aiming high. he had dreams for the future, damnit, and he planned on achieving them. he worked hard, trained hard, and prepared himself any other way he could think of to improve his chances of getting into u.a. as its first quirkless student. needless to say, the elitist views of hero society failed him. he was understandably crushed, but menma decided to take his spite to a whole new level. if he couldn't be a hero, then he would be the greatest villain this world had ever seen, and he would do it all without a quirk. or maybe he would just take someone else's.
